“Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today."
Benjamin Franklin
Many years ago, I needed new window treatments for my bedroom window. I love the look of natural woven shades and so that’s what I got.
When I got home with my new shade, I grabbed a step stool, a screwdriver and marched upstairs to install it. (Yes, I am DIY kind of girl).
Like most home projects, it didn’t go as smoothly as I had hoped, and loud sighing and swearing could be heard, but I got it done. New shade installed
Later that day, I was walking through the house expecting to see the shade, still in its bag, propped up in a corner waiting for me to install it. But, nope, the job was already done.
I didn’t procrastinate.
I didn’t stress about it.
I didn’t beat myself up.
I just did it.
And by doing it right away, I saved myself hours of dread, decision fatigue, and worst of all -guilt.
When I talk to business owners, they describe that same loop: procrastination → overwhelm → guilt. Especially when it comes to the “important but not urgent” stuff in their business.
Tips to Break the Procrastination Cycle:
Create a system
If you’re reinventing the wheel every time you onboard a new client, answer a common email, or prep a newsletter, that’s a sign you need a system. SOPs (standard operating procedures) sound fancy, but they’re really just “here’s how we do this” checklists (keep it simple). Future You will be so grateful.
Delegate the details.
There are things only you can do and a whole lot of things you don’t have to. If posting on social media, setting up email automations, or updating your website always fall to the bottom of your list… it’s time to hand those off.
Make a “do” date with yourself
Some tasks only take 5–10 minutes to do but take up so much mental energy when they sit unfinished. Block 10-15 minutes on your calendar every day or once a week to knock out one or two of those nagging to-dos.
