Help is not a “dirty four letter word

It’s not easy making the decision to hire someone to do a task for you that you could do yourself, even when you don’t really want to do that thing at all. The anticipation and/or procrastination causes stress and makes you feel guilty, resentful or like a failure. I am here to tell you that “Help” is not a (dirty) 4-letter word, it’s a strategy for success.

Recently, I helped a loved one move. It wasn’t a happy move and it was stressful for both of us. A friend suggested that I hire a professional to pack up their belongings and then unpack them in the new place. My first thought was, “I don’t need to spend money on something I can do myself.” However, feeling extremely overwhelmed by all of the moving pieces (no pun intended), I decided to invest in hiring a professional to unpack and set up the new apartment. I felt relieved to be receiving this help, even though I had reservations about the outcome.

After the movers put furniture in place and delivered all the boxes, the organizers got to work while my loved one and I went to lunch. When we returned to the apartment, almost everything had been put into place and the packing paper and boxes removed. How did they get it done so efficiently without much direction from me?

They had the right tools to open boxes, dispense of trash and hang pictures.

They had the expertise to know where to place belongings in the most logical way without having to ask.

They were decisive and efficient and got it all done within the time frame that was promised.

Hiring a professional to tackle this half of the move relieved so much stress and saved so much time allowing me to focus on what was most important, getting my loved one settled in quickly.
